Mourning Dove

Status:

Abundant native bird. Originally a migrant but began to breed in 1950s.


Local Habitat:

Throughout but especially on farmland and golf courses.


Habits:

Nests from March to August in trees and shrubs. Lays two white eggs. Its name derives from its mournful call. Can be seen in large flocks on dairy farms or ploughed fields.
