Cute Killdeer Chicks on the Loose. Help Keep Them Safe.
In the last few days, there have been sightings of Killdeer pairs with chicks. Killdeer (Charadrius Vociferous), a type of shorebird, are a regular migrant to the island, and in the last few years some have taken up residence and bred islandwide. The chicks are precocial, leaving the nest as soon as they hatch and either follow their parents around or hunker down in the grass or rocks. Their favourite nesting habitat is open rocky terrain with sparse grass, and some of the places they have been seen nesting in Bermuda are around the pond at the Airport, Clearwater Carpark, Port Royal golf course, and Dockyard. If disturbed, the parent birds will make their presence known by noisily flying away from their chick and performing a “broken wing” act, dragging their wing on the ground to lure potential predators away. Please Be CAREFUL driving in these areas as well as when walking dogs as the chicks tend to dart out and quickly run across paths and roads.

Thank you to Miguel Mejias and Paul Watson for an excellent outing at Ferry Reach on Saturday. We had a good group of 11 participants and 21 bird species were observed. The most notable sighting was a flock of 14 White-winged Crossbill. These are very rare visitors to Bermuda who were first sighted at Morgan's Point in November. It will be interesting to see how long they stay.
We also had a great opportunity to see birds up close as Paul Watson took measurements and put bands on the birds.

Spring is in the air. Join our excellent guides, Miguel Mejias and Paul Watson for bird walk around Ferry Point Park. They will also be banding birds so you will be ablt to see them up close and in the hand. We hope to find some interesting migrants on the walk. No experience needed, just bring your binoculars and your curiosity.
